【WHAT ARE 'SHINES'?】✨️✨️✨️ Shines come from the Mambo era of the 50s when step-dance was also hugely popular. Mambo dancers took notice of the step-dance icons like Fred Astaire and started doing a lot of similar solo footwork. ******* 【Do you want yo know more?】 Here's the unverified explanation that was included in old revisions of the 'Salsa (dance)' entry in Wikipedia: Normally, salsa is a partner dance, danced in a handhold. However, sometimes dancers include shines, which are basically "show-offs" and involve fancy footwork and body actions, danced in separation. They are supposed to be improvisational breaks, but there are a huge number of "standard" shines. Also, they fit best during the mambo sections of the tune, but they may be danced whenever the dancers feel appropriate. They are a good recovery trick when the connection or beat is lost during a complicated move or simply to catch the breath. One possible origin of the name shine is attributed to the period when non-Latin tap-dancers would frequent Latin clubs in New York in the 1950s. ❤️ Meet our guest teacher at the Unity Dance Project Saori @saorinchachawatanabe ❤️ Saori began dancing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2001. She has since lived in many places, and has managed to carry and nurture her passion for Salsa dancing to French Polynesia, New Caledonia, London, England, Japan, Bermuda, Laos, and Bangkok, Thailand. From a stint in London where she hones her smooth and graceful style and technique, in 2007, she co-founded her dance school in Japan called Miyasaru (Utsunomiya Salsa). When she moved to Bermuda in 2010, she had the chance to meet Jorge and Tanja of Island Touch and trained and performed with them. Apart from her endeavors as a student, instructor, and performer, Saori is a true global salsa and bachata dance ambassador who simply loves to be on the dance floor.
